The Black Sheep

Everything is not what it seems.

Being the black sheep is fashionable — for about a week. Everybody loves the outsider while the outsider is the topic. They'll quote you, repost you, tell you you're different. Then the conversation moves on and they file back into the flock. Back in line. Back to comfortable — following the one in front all the way to the slaughter, because the path was already cut and somebody else did the walking.

Follow the flock long enough and the slaughter starts to look normal. My grandfather walked it. My father walked it. So it must be the way things are.

But look at the record. Every generation before had it harder than the one that came after. It got better. And it never got better from people staying in line — it got better because somebody stepped out of it and paid the price, so the next one wouldn't have to. Walking the line isn't honouring them. It's wasting what they already paid for.

We've all heard the Hollywood stories. What it takes to get noticed. What people hand over. What they let happen to them for a door to open.

And here's the part nobody says out loud: most people hearing those stories still want in. They'll tell you the system is rotten and audition for it in the same breath. They want to burn it down from a seat at the table. That's not rebellion — that's cosplay. NPCs in a rebel skin, waiting their turn to get picked.

Don't get it twisted though — stepping out is dangerous. The flock isn't evil. They believe they're doing it the right way, and that's exactly what makes it dangerous. The moment you leave the line you're not just different, you're a threat to everybody still standing in it. Now there's a guard on you.

So sometimes you blend. When in Rome. You move how they move and talk how they talk, long enough to get through the room — knowing full well you don't share one of their values.

Camouflage isn't cosplay.

The difference is what you know. Camouflage is knowing exactly who you are and covering it to get out alive. Cosplay is not knowing, and hoping the costume makes it true. One is a tactic. The other is a whole life.

If I can't fit in, I build my own.

If I can't play in the NBA, I'll play in the TBA. Start the league. Make the rules. Why am I begging my way into something built to keep me out — when we set the standard? We make the culture. They package it and sell it back to us.

We are the movement.

You want to be great inside their system? Buy it. That's the whole secret. It's all for sale and everybody has a price — plenty of people sold things they can never buy back. They built it on greed and corruption and called it merit.

I've been writing songs since I was thirteen. Not making music — writing, before I had any idea what to do with it.

Every one of them a writer first. That's the part I took.

A lot of that is gone. Hard drives that died. Mac updates that swallowed whole folders. Sessions that won't open in anything anymore. Years of work that only exists in my head now, and it isn't coming back.

Every song here is one that made it.

So this isn't only about selling. It's about putting the work somewhere it can't quietly disappear on me again — somewhere it belongs to people instead of a drive in a drawer.

I'd rather be great on my own terms. That's what this is. No label, no middleman, no algorithm deciding who gets to hear me. A dollar a song, straight from me to you. If that's a smaller room — good. It's mine.

I'm not here to impress the world.
I'm here to make a difference.

Why a dollar matters

On streaming, a thousand plays pays me about three dollars. One song bought here is worth more than two hundred streams — and it goes straight into the next record, the next video, the next flight out.

I'm not asking for charity. I'm asking you to buy the music, the old way. You get a real file you keep forever. I get to keep going.
